Stablecoin usage is concentrated in cross-border transfers rather than in domestic retail spending. The pattern reflects which parts of the existing payment system work poorly.
The correspondent chain they route around
A conventional international transfer passes through a chain of banks, each holding accounts with the next. Every link adds a checkpoint, a cut-off time and a fee.
Banks have withdrawn from many of these relationships where compliance costs outweigh the business. Some corridors now have very few available routes, which raises cost and delay for everyone using them.
A transfer of a stablecoin moves on a shared ledger instead, with settlement occurring in one step. The chain of intermediaries is replaced by a single record update.
What a stablecoin actually promises
A stablecoin is a token whose issuer undertakes to redeem it at a fixed value in a reference currency, usually a major one. Its stability comes from that redemption promise rather than from anything in the token itself.
Backing arrangements differ. Some issuers hold short-term government securities and bank deposits, others hold riskier assets or rely on algorithmic mechanisms with a weaker track record.
The credibility of the promise is therefore an assessment of the issuer, not of the technology. Reserve composition and audit practice are the details that matter.
Why settlement speed matters more than fees
A business paying a supplier abroad often cares more about certainty of arrival than about the cost of the transfer. Funds stuck in transit tie up working capital and delay shipments.
Same-day settlement lets a buyer release goods sooner and shortens the period during which either side carries counterparty risk. That has a value separate from the fee saved.
Weekend and holiday coverage adds to the appeal, since ledgers do not observe banking calendars. A payment initiated on a Saturday does not wait for Monday's clearing window.
Where the friction actually sits
Moving the token is cheap, but converting local currency into it and back out again is not. Those on and off ramps carry spreads, limits and identity checks.
The total cost of a corridor therefore depends on how competitive the local exchange market is at each end. In thin markets the ramp spread can exceed a conventional bank fee.
Liquidity providers at each end must hold inventory in both the token and the local currency. The cost of funding that inventory is what the spread ultimately pays for.
How rules are developing
Several jurisdictions have introduced or proposed frameworks covering issuance, reserve backing and redemption rights. The details differ substantially between them and continue to change.
Requirements commonly address who may issue, what reserves must be held and how holders redeem. Anyone using these instruments across borders is subject to the rules of both ends of the transfer.
